Flame Altar placement
So, just wondering if people are picking any of the towns or buildings they discover as a place to permanently leave an altar and build or rebuild the structures?

Having a limited number of Altar's my inquiry is to identify if people just like a place or if there's a strategic reason to pick certain places over others.

Thanking in advance for any responses!

I have taken over a town because of location and the comfort level is greater than my home base. I am in the process of repairing a couple of the buildings and adding some new structures. It also has farm land ready to go. I'm also using one alter as a "jump to" location to complete a quest - after that I will probably remove it and use it somewhere else.

I usually prefer to build my own house. Right now I`m building a wizard tower on a hill with a nice view on the capital :steamhappy:

My main base it at the "harvest homestead". I like this base as it has large planting fields already and the upstairs of the main house gives you quite a high rested buff early game. I put the NPCs each in their own space - like the barn-ish building is for the farmer where I put all my seed station etc.
I am trying to restore this farm, but existing structures are a pain to restore at the moment. building new is easier it seems.
For other altars, I place them in areas hard to reach (not close to spires) or where I mine. One can always remove altars once you don't need them anymore. Be careful though to not remove the altar where you build your base as it'll remove anything you built and stored! once you log out.
What are you choosing to do?

If you don't want to build something yourself, taking over existing buildings is a good option.
But if you like and plan to build, it is better to choose a relatively empty area and located high rather than low and far away from spires, so that you can fly from the base in different directions, like from a spire.
When you occupy an area with a base, nothing will be regenerated there. That's the downside.

I pretty much did the same as Faruviel.

I enjoy building, but I'm pretty much a Form Follows Function builder.

I found a location that was so high that it could function just like an Ancient Spire, if you only placed a Flame Altar there. Flint and copper are nearby, although at the time I made my main base there, I had no recipes that used copper. It's very near to the Pillars of Creation.

However, once I complete the story content available so far, I plan to renovate an existing structure while I wait for the next story content release.

Although odds are, I'll play Rising World instead, which has no story content at all. It is also voxel based, but has better building tools.

I built a starter base at the beginning, like most likely everybody did and later on built a new base on a nice position.

The other altars i used only as fast travel points. Near ressources or in places hard to reach from any ancient spires (especially with the early gliders) and also repositioned them as needed.

Thanks for all the replies and great answers!! I haven't heard of "Rising World" so I'll have to check that out and will checkout Harvest Homestead when I find it.

I have altars in my starting home-base which I made a Level3 flame for now. I have an altar in Peaceful Acres (travel point), Woodgard (I like the big church even though I won't rebuild it) and Mark of Sameth (for the copper) even though I don't know how to make copper bars yet.

I just got the saw blade and dropped an altar at Fawnsong Frontier as a travel point. I'm Level 10 and only explored about 15% of the map so far and looking forward to finding more great spaces.

I build at a nice green lush biom plateau - higher then most ancient spire towers - in the middle of the map, just west and in sight of the pillars of creation. Very flat and on different layers, with a nice mountain "in the back". I placed their TWO 160x160x160 flame altars (orange border to border) and so I cover the whole plateau.

Here a video of the place, if someone want to have a look at the place (german video of another community member) ... map position at 0:15.
