How to grow berry bushes

So I've been trying to figure this out myself and even read the other posts on this, then a friend of mine gave me a suggestion

"Don't pick them until the berries can be seen"

So, basically, grow the seedlings as per normal, but when it reaches it's "full grown" looking state, don't pick them then. Pick them when you see the berries.
