Moreover coop is somewhat busted for now (quest reward only for one player; quests linked to server, not a player...)
So definitely a bad idea to play it with random people.
However if you have a friend or two with voice chat it definitely worth a try.
For example I played whole game with 2 friends, took us about 100 hours to beat all 75 quests (may be we missed 1 or 2).
Keen have not built the game for solo players. They are open about this. Yes the game is more difficult for solo players and there is no difficulty setting or save game option. That isn't to say you can't have a good time. Base building is good and worthy of praise. The early game will be tough and you'll need more than an hour or two to decide if the game is for you. Really, like everything, you take all the opinions and evidence and make your own mind up.
Areas you claim are also fast travel spots, so getting around is easy too.
