Pitch black nights seems like a bug
I see a lot of people complaining about the game being too bright and too much bloom (not an issue for me) but my nights are pitch black when the moon is behind the clouds. Absolute crushed blacks except for light sources.

Nights look great when the moon isnt being blocked by clouds, it's dark but not so dark you can't see anything, but once it goes behind the clouds it's completely black with bad looking short falloff on dim light sources like mushrooms.

Are other people able to see at night without a torch?

I have an Nvidia card with OLED.

I have observed what you're talking about. By the way, don't waste a wisp light potion. The dark phase is directly before dawn. Just wait it out.

I like it. Otherwise what's the point of having a light source.

Well, in a world without light pollution nights should be pretty much like that.

with so many POIs about with usable beds, just sneak in it and press e for afew seconds of "dark" to pass

Pretty sure its on purpose and it makes sense.

First of all the really dark period is short - you often also have beds in many areas and you also see different things better at night.

Last but not least - the night actually changes gameplay and requires lightsources - in many other games night is just like day with almost no difference.

It's pretty awesome, I've hated the generation of games afraid of the dark. Finally a game where stuff can creep up on me and jump at me out of the darkness :)

Now just make snowstorms and fog just as good an environmental obstacle...

Yeah, I definitely like it. Makes my base feel all the more valuable. A place with light and warmth in the cold, black night.

The only thing i dislike about lighting in this game is the bloom effect - its just way too extreme sometimes - for example a cave with a big exit to the wrong side of the map pretty much constantly blinds you even within the cave ...

I would like an option to tone that down since that really doesnt serve a gameplay purpose. And in general the Bloom when going from a cave to the open world is too over the top. If it was like this in RL 100% of people would probably crash their cars after existing a random tunnel.

Nights are great.

I'm torn on that. I like that it's realistic in the sense that your eyes need a second to readjust to bright light, but the downsides are... Well, the one you stated, but also that you can't always get a good view through your windows.

I dont want them to remove it - but as it is now its not realistic and it can be really annoying. For example in my cave there are torches so it isnt pitch black - yet the bloom is as if ive been locked without light for a year and just jumped to the outside at midday.

Also the lighting in the cave making you almost blind also is not realistic.

But in general i agree that its not a bad mechanic in general - like for example other really bad stuff like lensflare or headbobbing (thinks that try to imitate something that doesnt really exist like that in a really bad way).

I will admit I love how dark it can be, especially in a tomb/dungeon, and requiring a light source but it is bit too dark at night. I literally can't see my character at all. Not even a glimmer of light on the helm. Just nothing, absolute darkness, black.

Which is why there are torches etc. - and funny enough torches are the only things you cant repair.

Also usually darkness is half as bad as some people state here - do you mean the short ammount of time when its really dark - for example right before the morning?

You can actually repair the higher quality torches, like the wax torch. Just realized that myself yesterday.

I dont think people understand, it is absolute black, a black screen with no detail besides a few points of light that dont really cast any light, thats not realistic at all. It is unplayable without a torch, because its black, not dark, but black, the character isn't visible except for the skin shader which is clearly not on purpose, I can't see the ground at all, I can't see anything but the skybox and some points of light like mushrooms and the shroud which have a goofy looking abrupt light falloff.

Given how bad it looks I think it's a bug. The shroud especially looks dumb because it seems to be reflecting light properly but the black ground isn't so its just a super bright blue cloud floating in nothingness.

And it is not a shortwhile, it is 90% of the night because things are only visible when the moon is out from behind the clouds (which looks good and realistic, very dark and you can't see very far but you can still see the ground).

I honestly don't think people saying it's good are having the same problem, they probably get "dark," not a black screen.

I'm with you! It's like that for me too.

Pitch black. Nothing. (Even out camping, like I have for nearly 40 years, on dark cloudy nights, no stars/moon, it still wasn't so dark *outside* that I couldn't see at all.)

Again, I think when inside, it SHOULD be pitch black.

Even playing this game in a dark room, no lights at all, and still the screen is fully black [until the moon comes out in the game].
