Yes you can, anytime you desire :)
You can fast travel between all the flame altars you put up and the spires you've unlocked. So say you're about to enter a dangerous cave and don't know what to expect, yet. Best strategy would be to build a flame altar right outside the cave so that, if you die, you can get back there quick by fast-traveling there. Note that there's a limited amount of flame altars you can build in the world, depending on your flame altar level.
