Once you have found Flax plants in the wild, they can be turned into Flax seeds to grow yourself. The flax plants that you harvest can be turned into linen. The linen can be turned into fabric. Fabric can be turned into padding.
As for getting through the deadly shroud, since you are in the mid game range of available content, need to upgrade your flame, likely need level 4.
Also: kill shroud-roots. (use a wood-axe) every new kill will give you additional 3 skillpoints. The tree has several skills to easy the surviving in the srhoud (for example extending your time for killing mobs with a magic-weapon. Or even direct extended time.)
"Elixier-Wells" will have guaranteed shroud-roots at the bottom and provide you with full shroud time at the top (look for a flame-altar as you find them in the world). You might need to kill one or several mini-bosses, thouigh. (and be prepared for LOTS of brutlings.)
But you can also find some roots directly in the shroud. These will also give you 3 skillpoints after chopping them.
Meat will provide you with a relative huge life-buff. (the better the meat, the better the buff, but the shorter the time... For example: Boar-meat will give 150 life-points, but only lasts 10 minutes. while rabbit-flesh will only give 50 life-points, but lasts 30 minutes.) Of course, you need to grill it fiirst. Later you will be able to automatically grill your meat. (at the beginning you need to sit on a campfire and grill the meat manually. This won't take very long, but must be done for every piece of meat individually.)
I think the best way in this game to surviva against mobs is to not get hit at all... So a ranged fighter will probably have an easier life than a melee-one. Staff-spells do the biggest damage (depending on resistance) but need to charge up, e. g. is the slowes attack.
Wands are good against singular mobs (or slow ones.) Staff and bows have significant higher range, though, but need projectils or charges. (except of eternal spells) and mana.
And use your shield! it's one of the best surviving-equipments you have.
Asking these questions shows that you are nowhere near the endgame. Troll less.
