yes there is a map height build limit where the entire sky turns red and wont allow you to build any further up.

I would recommend keeping the two Flame Alters above/below each other until you're done sculpting the bottom of your floating island. Use the scaffold with your lower Flame Alter to sculpt the under-belly of your island when you want it to look a specific way.
