It's quite some time in. I think it's about a lvl 10-15 area that unlocks what you need for the well
If it does come later, but we need water now to plant, etc... then my point is valid I believe. If we need wood, we go and chop wood; if we need stones or ore, we go and mine ore. That is part of the game... but if there are no wells to build until later, then the only alternative it to find flasks or find wells in villages, which means a lot of running to fetch water, which is silly. I don't mind the work of cutting down trees or mining, but running around to get water in all corners of the map seems like a silly concept...
Just my 2 cents... I absolutely LOVE this game regardless... BEST survival game in a long time!
Craft what you can at NPC’s. Crafting items can sometimes unlock new recipes. Quests can also be the source of new recipes. I don’t remember for me what/when I specifically unlocked wells.
As far as "running around" you only really need to do that once to find it and just drop down a Flame Altar so you can go back and forth easily, especially for water since it regenerates over time.
If you've just unlocked copper&planks you're fairly close to the well, but you'd likely have to do a few more quests.
Funny enough, i never had any issues with water. I never even looked for it, and by the time i started farming.. I had ~120 water.
Then again, i very rarely used water as a consumable. So there's that :P
