This is actually risky as you can crash your PC if you mess with the wrong area in memory or corrupt your OS.
Internal modding would require you to do a dll injection like with Unity games, where they 'run' the dll with their executable when the game loads up (it reads all the dll in the game folder, which allowed games like Valheim to have a mod loader to run).
For instance it's possible for someone to have a modified Steam_api64.dll file so it injects code to allow modding the game after it loads Steam api in the game (this lets you join friends on steam, find steam servers, etc).
The possible modding that should be viable is farming mods, like adding a TAB option when planting seedlings to plant multiple crops in a 2x2 and 3x3 spacing, like with the construction hammer.
And adding more shapes to the build menu, and allowing you to technically build outside of your altar in some degree.
Or even camera mods to allow better 3rd person aiming, or zoomed into a first person perspective.
ooh good to know, thanks!
i don't mod a lot of games but the ones i do its usually content or mechanics. My Rimworld is sitting around 100 mods right now and its glorious lol
I figured after first discovering the mods on nexus, then went to find out about the dev's official stance on them that i should probably avoid them for the minute. But it did get me thinking what (if any) mods i or others would actually want/add.
I would absolutely love some farming mods, it in it's current state feels a little lacking.
and ngl the option to choose the spacing would be far less finnicky than turn snapping off and use sniper mode (low dpi) mouse mode to place them lol
The shapes 100% is a huge one for me as well as the ability to nuke entire buildings in but a few clicks. I'd prefer it if you could 'create' your own shapes though.
What I recall Keen saying was that there were no plans to make mods allowable during Early Access, **right now**, but that they like the idea of game mods and it will probably be allowable in the future.
Your post seems to be kind of "phishing" for what players may want so you can get started making the mods and get them out before anyone else does. If I'm wrong about that, I apologize. But I see NO reason to make mods at this point because the game is still VERY early in development and so much could actually change before 1.0 is released. I would imagine that Keen would like the opportunity to develop their game, in their vision, FIRST before allowing others to modify it - and maybe even creating mods that the Devs already have PLANNED for the full release. It would be stepping on their toes, and IMO... almost disrespectful. Let Keen develop the game and after it's released, THEN start talking mods.
I wish i was that talented ngl and don't stress, it does come off like that and i could've worded it differently.
I just enjoy discussing possible potential and was just doing it in a friends discord and figured it'd be interesting to see what others think.
And i do hope you're on the money about Keen just playing it down for now so they can complete the game first with minimal interference. I actually don't mod games very often unless i absolutely have to (like playing Ark on my friends server) and the only one i've modded because i wanted to was Rimworld.
I feel discussions like this can also give Keen a "fly on the wall" look at people discussing potential features, all be it in the context of mods. So i don't understand how you got to it potentially being disrespectful but hey whatevz we all see things differently
I will say that i feel modability killed the progression to full release for 7 Days 2 Die, so i kinda see where you're coming from i think?
I only do it if the game is dead, like 7d2d but one could argue that people modding it caused TFP to not really bother working on their game properly.
(we're on what? 10 years of EA for them now? eesh)
My bad for not wording what I said differently, too! LOL! I didn't mean YOU were being disrespectful. I meant people making mods right now for a game in EARLY Early Access is kind of disrespectful in that they aren't "trusting" that Keen is capable of making a very good game all on their own.
I do apologize for misunderstanding your intentions. I wrote a post earlier that was about 5 miles long about what I like and don't like... I guess I'm using to that way of letting Devs know what people like/don't like.... not only me, but those that replied. Anyway, I meant no offense!
I believe this is one of the reasons Keen gave for not writing it so that mods can be used at this time. They don't want players installing mods that might really screw up their games, and then everyone is left wondering... was it the game, or the mod that broke it so badly?
Hey, no stress m8 i enjoy a vibrant discussion and making any corrections/clarifications when/if needed.
Too be honest, i really am looking forward to seeing what the devs get upto in the coming year(s) majority of my "mehs" about it are largely just early implementations of features that will no doubt be fixed down the road. Plus i'm super hopeful they get emboldened enough to attempt adding water bodies to the game, they've commented on the difficulty of it and i'd love to see them rise to the challenge more than wanting the feature lol
Yeah makes sense, Steam forums get littered with folk screaming the game doesn't work while omitting they have exactly 5000000 mods installed lol
Where are you building!?!? lmao
I've thus far only found one area i couldn't build in, the city.
That said i wouldn't mind the ability to build there
I would like to see a Master brewer crafting npc. Crafting station would be a distillery (with upgrades of course). A big copper cooker, brass pipes and steam. Recipes for various drafts (stout, pale ale, etc.) Building items could be bar sections including short straight, long straight, curved. Also taps of course and a platter of glass mugs and wooden kegs. And a stage with musical instruments. And the stage comes with tavern sounds (clinking glasses, laughter, chatter and tavern style music). If you don't want the sound file, don't place the stage. I think it was LOTRO that had a keg where if you drank from it, you passed out (screen went black), and you woke up in a totally random place on the map. Our guild would get one on Friday nights after doing a raid or a session of pvp in the Moors. We'd put it on the floor in the center of our guild hall, and we would all drink from it at the same time. Ton of fun!, We'd all let the others know in guild chat where we ended up. If I recall (this was like 18 years ago) we could end up in trees and other crazy spots. 8-)
I absolutely LOVE this idea, a tavern would be super great to have in a game like this.
If not for any other reason than you run into them semi-regularly in destroyed towns and making your own would be dooope
