Shroud Cores invested in Flame should be refundable if extinguished
When I placed my first Flame, I decided that this would basically be my "Town Center".

Unfortunately, as I placed more buildings in my town and managed to do some renovations, I realized that I initially placed my Flame in a spot where I didn't really like it to be, so I wanted to move it. Unfortunately, you can't "move" a Flame, so I looked to an alternative way to move it to a different spot. I placed a new one in the spot where I decided will be my actual town center, then I extinguished the old one.

Once the old one demolished itself after some 30secs, I was expecting to retrieve my invested shroud core (Altar Range was already Lv2). But I didn't get it back. Now my buildable area has shrunk and I'm worrying that when I log out and left my current Flame as Lv1, the structures outside the current buildable area will be demolished.

I just wished that if you demolish a Flame, the invested Shroud Cores would be refunded. Or maybe just straight up allow the Flame to be moved around. Although, this may be a long shot because I understand that players could abuse this by building in an area with a Flame and then moving their Flame around so they could build in additional areas, so... I'm really at a loss for a balanced solution that could allow this mechanic to be implemented.

Maybe allow the Flame to be moved around, but before allowing the player to confirm the move, all player-built structures should be within a buildable area?

place and upgrade the new alter and upgrade the size where you want it before removing the old one, there is not restriction to placing an alter inside the build area of another, doing this insures that your stuff is safe before removing the older alter. the cores are so easy to get after playing more then the first couple hours.

Yeah unfortunately I already removed the old one so the Shroud Cores are lost. I saw one comment from a YT video that you can craft it from a Survivor you can liberate further into the game? Not sure yet so I gotta play more.

BUT BUT BUT I found a temporary workaround to this issue. Very glad that I found out my Flame activation capacity is 4, so like you said, I overlapped some Flames together and thankfully the aggregated buildable area covers why whole town.

But yeah gotta be careful about the fact that you lose invested cores once you demolish a Flame.

So it is true that you can craft them further into the game. Thanks for the info, I guess I gotta progress more to get to this point. Been playing for 12hrs but not much quest progress yet because I got addicted to the building system so I've been in my base for most of my playtime.

I fell in deep into this game :D Keep an eye on secondary quests as quite a few give new types of building block styles to unlock. But if you're into base building you'll need to progress to get to the fun stuff.
