Im not good with navigating the map so I can't describe it well. But I have found some interesting places to drop the flame. Places you would have to be creative to build on.

I'm working on a build on top of the Pillars of Creation. Seems centralized (for EA) and the elevation will allow me to glide to a lot of places

It's hard to recommend places. The Point of interest density in this map is really high.

On the south east side of that little starting patch there is a path that leads to a cliffside, I thought about building there.

Right north through the shroud I liked the area on the other side and felt like I could put a house down easily.

But really I only remember places with things more then places without.

You do have multiple flame alters so I suggest maybe just making a simple base to progress until you find your home then moving.

Given the fact that you can teleport basicly every time back to your base with your full inventory, there is less need for strategic placement. Just drop a small shack anywhere with the focus of just getting the necessary stuff done and explore the world. Once you've found a place that looks great for you, place another altar and start building pretty in stead of pragmatic.

Aesthetic choice tops all in base building currently, if you need a high spot for gliders smash a alter on top of the pillars.

I like Woodward, great for early and mid game. Has farm soil, flint, wood, shroud oil, a well, and wood. The port city is a pain, but outside the flame shrine in the Northeast of the city is a great spot for small base, there's a clay mine just east of the northeast wall. Once you get to the plateau there a giant fortress with limestone and copper.

One tip I'll share is an easy way to get materials. If you place an alter in a building, then using your hammer disassemble it using the 2x2 block erase. Focus on the foundations as they usually are very deep. In no time at all I had 9k worth of sandstone building blocks. Don't bother upgrading the flame altar when you do this as you lose any upgrades when you extinguish the flame. The other nice thing about doing this is that after a short time the area will return to the way it was previously, so infinite resources.
