I had that issue, but if you persevere and very very slowly nudge toward the spot , its possible, even on a good slope.
As said above, your spot where you died is usually replaced somewhere out of the deadly shroud by the game, but near it , check with map.
Get as close as you can to the cliff edge.
Pull out your pickaxe and dig until you can get to the tombstone. Once you go down far enough, you should be able to reach your tombstone.
This happened to me once, but the cliff wasn't very tall, so it may take you multiple trips into the shroud.
Happend after the last patch. Now I cannot get to Rivenwood anymore sins I have not unlocked the tower yet.
