Two things you can do if it is in a bad spot.
- One is use the pickaxe like mentioned.
- Other is to place an altar, if you have a spot free/left, within building distance and build out to it and than uninstall your altar.
In the EA release I've noticed that there are small bits on a cliff that can catch you just long enough for the game to reset the fall point but not long enough to stop the actual fall which can result in the bag being halfway down a chasm.
Not always possible but it you do start a plummet, turning around to face away from the cliff and gliding even for a moment can be a life saver.
