You can only stop the flame from burning after wich time it removes itself.
Basicly you have to start from scratch when you do it.
For me, I have made the base at the starting area my main base and use the towers and other altars as portals. (I do not enhance those. Just build a small base close by with a workbench so I can repair my stuff and relax if I need to wait for the morning)
Some say the starting area is useless etc. but in reality it is a vast flat area suited for a big base. You can create a small village there with buildings for each of the 5 compagnions if you wish. (made 3 buildings myself + my main building)
So what is it players wanna "move" there base? its pointless sins you can port arround.
It's an important distinction because this global one is the one that required more stuff like heads etc etc and is the harder of the two to gather the mats for. Just be sure to always have one altar down somewhere and you are good.
The upgrade you lose is the "increase building area" upgrade which only cost those blue cores which are easy to get...you can even craft them.
Place another altar in the new position you want. The new position has to be within the area of the one you want to adjust. Upgrade that new altar's range to the level of the old one with Shroud Cores.
Now extinguish the flame of the old one. The new altar will automatically be on the same level as the other one, including all the upgrades done on the old altar.

Yes, you can another flame altar nearby, and have their area of affect overlap. Just follows the same rules as placing any altar. Has to be a certain amount of level terrain around it, or you get an error message.
Yeah, i mean my ss shows that its possible and easy enough... And having 8 alters available... just seems easier then trying to relocate just one. but idk maybe some people like need need all 8 ;)
