Upgrade your armor, you will feel the diference.
Alao, shield is OP in this game, you can block almost any attack.

For super early levels, craft or loot and use a Wand to range them until close. Craft or loot and use a Shield. You can hold block and take zero damage for a very long time at lower levels.

For blocking, there is a Parry mechanic that will stagger the enemy (Melee). You have to not be holding block then right mouse just as the enemy starts their attack. It's tricky to get right but amazing one you do.

Next, learn to dodge roll (ctrl + WASD) it will save your life many times, but it uses tons of Stamina so be careful.

Lastly height. Use the terrain to "cheese" the enemy. If you can get up on even a small ledge and fire Wand attacks down, they won't be able to do much to you.

I'll second the dodge roll. As with most combat games I bind "dodge" to my mouse thumb button so it's largely muscle memory. If you have trouble parrying, you can dodge behind them and get a few hits in, then when they turn to your new direction, repeat.

The parry mechanism is actually VERY forgiving and powerful in this game - Lean into it, you'll be pleasantly amazed. There's also a lot to be said for focusing your build on the basics like raw stats at first, till you've got enough to get into things like double jump + jump attack + a big feck off two hander that'll handle most things with basic hopping about. After that the option to lean into wanding becomes viable at just a few points further out, with big healing boosts in the tree.

Make sure you are rested as this gives a massive stamina bonus, put more decorative items in your base as this increases the timer. Parrying is also op.

Whats some skills you want to get asap? Is like, 1 build stronger than the other? For example magic is super duper strong and melee is meh and archery is aight?

Maybe a wand? I've gone to my wand a lot in this game. I found a Legendary and am staying with it. Save points for a double jump, it also helps in battle when you dodge.

In my experience; Unless you're a tank, it feels like if anything tickles you, you're dead... I'm level 19 (mage) and get one shot by hyena's, constantly crowded and sprinting mobs make dodging somewhat useless due to the delay it takes to get the next attack off, ranged targeting system is well, just dismal and messes with movement and camera way too much, but the cross-hair is also near impossible to see mid-combat to see where you're even aiming, compounding the combat problems.
Parry is amazing, if you can time it right and if you're not dealing with multiple enemies...
Solo; my progress is gated/halted/near impossible, pretty much all my quests right now can 1~2 shot me.

Could just stock up on potions etc, but that is a another challenge in itself.

Ignoring the large number of bugs I run into with combat in general (have not double-jumped once yet without triggering glider). Feels unbalanced, and a punishing experience, buffed, geared or not, unless you are over-levelled and over-geared, melee or practically exploiting the AI's inability to pathfind/target due to the environment and spend 30+ mins camping a wall to get that 'perfect angle' to tap a tiny bit of HP off the mob.
It's early access, so one would presume that would get polished in time... For now, if you're struggling, I just recommend getting some more bodies in your game, so at least you have people for a circle-res.

When it comes to combat double jump is amazing as a low cost air version of dodge roll. Because the game allows you to move forward some while jumping you can redirect yourself on the second jump to position for a better attack or just further evade their attack.

It sounds silly on the surface, but double jump bunny hopping with a wand + shield at mid-range is a very effective way of dealing with enemies in situations where it's too dangerous to use a 2h and jump attack.
