Item rarity
Can anyone explain item rarity? I find two items of the same type but one is uncommon and one is rare (like a bow or a wand)..however the stats are identical. I don't get it.

Yup I had two bows.. one green and one blue..

The difference is.. you can upgrade a green item once, blue twice, purple three times and legendary 4. That is the only difference I can see.

It's just a symptom of bad loot design. You get this issue when you dont scale rarity with item level. Your level 6 rare bow and level 7 uncommon bow will be practically identical. A level 20 common item will be way stronger than a level 10 legendary item simply because of the level. Now, a level 10 legendary will be much stronger than a level 10 common, but only because they're both level 10.

Even though you can enhance a rarer item more times than a less rare item, you'll still end up finding a common item that has base stats higher than your fully upgraded legendary items stats.

This is bad loot design. I hate throwing away cool looking legendary weapons just because they're underpowered. Loot like that should scale as you play the game and when it doesn't, it just makes everything feel so much less rewarding especially when you're constantly swapping out epic/legendary loot for higher level common loot.

This is why Transmogrification in blizzard rpgs is so cool, Because you can still use that really cool looking lvl 3 hand axe with the stats of a legendary weapon.

I wouldn’t call this bad loot design, though. Weapons scaling based on rarity by the level makes sense. A higher level weapon should have higher base stats than a lower level weapon.

Yes, the legendary item should last you some time, but eventually it isn’t going to be strong enough compared to a higher level weapon.

They start with the same stats but when you enhance them, they improve and increase in level. The higher the rarity, the more mods it has that can be activated and each mod increases the level off the item and its damage.

So a level 15 legendary wand can have 5 mods applied to it taking it up to level 20, while the same wand, as uncommon, can have 1 mod, taking it up to level 16 with much less damage.

Items of increased rarity does give extra upgrades, but on top of that it also gives extra levels. As each upgrade in addition to extra stats, also gives extra item levels to the item.
Which is why upgrading a level 20 item as legendary, level 23 item as legendary or a level 25 item to legendary doesn't make any difference. So if you don't want the challenge of farming the level 30 area, you can in fact just farm the level 20 or 23 area and get the exact same item level items in the end.
Edit: Since the max item level is 25.

I will never give up my glowing sword! It lights my way in caves so I don't need the torch all the time. Weapon leveling be damned!
