Hey!
I just tested it. Created a public game (click START -> HOST (start a public game, saved locally)), hit PLAY and the option to set up a password showed up.
You can make a local game and randomly switch between SP and MP whenever you like - when you pick the MP option you can set a password and playercount.
The only point to get some sort of dedicated server vor coop with few people would be if you want everyone to be able to play when the others arent online because if you dont use a dedicated server no one can play if the person having the savegame isnt playing.
Dont get your argument at all - its a great game even alone and what is your problem with world-respawn outside of your building area?
A world where you can even dig caves etc. would probably get performance issues soon and savegame problems if everything would be saved - also by having that mechanic they can also update the game and add new stuff without many problems they would have if everythign would be saved.
That's exactly what makes my "recommended for single-player" list, lol.
