Can I play in solo but transfer to public server to join others?

Can I start out playing in a solo game, to build a base and explore, but when I want to team up with others use this same character to play on another server? Can you make a character to be used back and forth on different servers?

If so, the items gathered and unlocks gained will carry over to my solo game server when head back there?

Yes you can take your character to any server/world. Items in your inventory and hotbar will go with you. You will keep your skills and XP levels. However quests to unlock the NPC's etc will be RESET and you'll have to do them again on any world you travel to (if you want them there). I'm not positive about crafting unlocks... if they will carry with you or not.
