Honestly, just spec into whatever you want because it is easy to respec if you aren't happy with how it feels.

I'm only level 6 so far, but:
As far as magic goes though, I am enjoying the use of wands. They're especially great early game for kiting and doing damage. Melee seems far superior if you're completely surrounded and can't dodge roll away though, because the wand casting isn't fast enough to keep up when fully surrounded.

The staff is alright, but I haven't used it much. It does higher damage, but spells are consumables and take a little time to charge. Spells can be crafted later and you will eventually start building an excess if you aren't spamming them.

So, magic feels great with single target (or small groups of enemies) but is situational as it won't save you if a large group rushes you.

I'm not sure what the maximum skill points are, but I'm sure you can have plenty of variety in your build, so experiment with it.

Magic is expensive since spells are consumable AND costs mana.
Its a burst dmg only since mana runs out so quick.
It doesnt feel lika a proper class more like a sprinkled on function.

Why specialize in this tree and wear magic gear if it makes you weaker then just going melee and wear tanky gear that doesnt cost consumables.

Wands don’t consume a resource. Just staves. And it sounds like late game there’s none consumable staff spells.

feels really good. its like safe mode in many cases. i would round out your character a bit tho and not go all in on magic or youll be super squishy. some constitution and a mainhand weapon like a sword go a long way for close range survival once the magic is dry.

Wand is better than spells cuz you dont need charges. And magic dmg increases wand dmg.
So far i have little use for staff spells. theyre slow. cumbersome...and very limited in charges. save the staff for healing its good at that. chain lightning is good but uses so much mana...

There are "Eternal" spells to find as well. They have infinite charges, so that is a bonus too.
I'll also point out, there are multiple healing spells. Haven't tried them yet though, so unsure of how effective they are.

i feel like mage is only supposed to be viable for group play. staff is an aimable long range weapon with very limited mobility. lack of mana means you can only really hope to fight groups of two.

the wands are a more flexible mid range weapon but the convoluted path the projectiles follow makes aiming it impossible. it aims itself and tracks it's targets. but shots will bend around a guy about to stab you to hit the insect too far away behind him because the wand felt like that was important somehow. no enemy around and your second shot has a reticle to aim with. and it fires like a rifle

which leaves the mage needing CQ damage too often. my character might be dressed like a hogwarts hobo but more often than not i'm swinging a sword

Currently 23 int, 15 willpower, but i dont have the best armor yet.
Damage between 800 and 2000 per shot. Mana is recharging super fast and i passively heal for ~60hp per second.

Oneshoting level 30 bosses and most mobs with infinite firepower...

Also found two very good rings with +60% mana in total.

Still trying to find better weapon/armor though.
