When I look at the download info it says "shader pre-caching update"
I think this might somehow be related to vulkan shaders taking a ridiculous amount of time to precache(even with the download) so I always skip it.
Mint with ge-proton8-27
I'm going to disable shader precaching in steam>settings>downloads>shader pre-caching and see if it fixes the issue.
To rule that out or confirm it I am trying this:
Disable Shader Pre-caching from Steam > Settings > Downloads > Shader Precaching
Not really a true fix, since it affects all other games' shader caching, but whatever, I wanna play without downloading 8GB everytime I exit.
I don't see a valid reason as why
Might be Steam(-for-Linux) issue though and not one of this game in particular:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/10285
After reading through github it seems the similar issue of ALL games randomly having a shadercache "update" to download has existed since at least 2021 which follows my experience but don't know if this related issue we're having is the same.
I looked through my steam logs and with my limited knowledge I see "Can't read enough bytes for cache file header, skipping" for processing of 1203620(Enshrouded) shader cache files with a later a call to start redownloading. This isn't quite the same as what I'm seeing from the github op's logs but is identical to the logs of another poster and both have the same result of starting the redownload of the cache. I can see both the shadercache folder and the 8.5GB file in question on my system. I'll go post on github in a bit because this is about as far as my knowledge takes me and I'm unsure if there's something I can do on my end about this.
For now, my non-solution is to just pause the download and never let it finish as the game will run without it. I also have steam auto-downloads scheduled to 5 or 6AM so they wont run on startup. Hopefully someone smarter than me might figure more out.
I do have shader downloads every now and then, but rarely above all in all 5MB and I can't think of a day where this would be the case for all installed games - just a few. I have about 25 games installed.
Enshrouded is the only exception with huge downloads every time I quit the game, start steam, boot ... it downloads 8+GB and then verifies / installs forever. My M.2 disks are pretty new and pretty fast.
I don't seem to have this indication in my logs... kinda sad. I have to move this to an unmouted disk for now and play something else ... can't download 8GB every day multiple times.
Don't know if it is a game issue or a proton/steam issue.
Will try to disable pre caching til it's sorted out.
Maybe the shader_log.txt content will help to sort something out.
