The game is seriously lacking in signage. For example, hang them next to chests and sign them. And hang large signs on buildings in the form of a craft icon. It’s really inconvenient to navigate when the base is large.

Can we color code our chests at least? I haven't seen anything like that yet.

There is another system: If you go near a chest you see the first three slots of the content. So if you put there wood, you know "wood chest" without have to open it.
