How far along is that? I mean, is acquiring these NPCs still early-game / tutorial timeframe?

Not exactly early game, but you can easily find the carpenter it in about 3 hours. The issue is progressing your flame high enough to get past the deadlier shroud to get to where you can find most of the clay you need for the carpenter.
