How to chop while standing in place?

Everytime i try to break up items on the ground, or chop trees etc, the game acts as if i am gighting for my life charging each action as if I am attacking. isn't there a button I can hit that forces me to stand in place? Would be good if you are trying to tank and hold in place as well.....

Any thoughts or do we Need to Bug the Dev's for this kind of a feature. If Fighting in a party this is a valuable tool.

Get a felling axe, the hatchet is a weapon, not a tool, though it does have bonus dmg to wood.

Do you have an Axe? I mean you can break most of the stuff with your weapon. But there are tools for wood chopping or gathering stone. You can craft them as the work bench.

Thank you both! ya I was using the Weapon Axe.... explains it. But still, a hold and swing button would still be handy.
