Troy, I know you're too cool and above all this sort of thing, but in case you didn't hear about it, there's this concept called "helpful empathy". You can just answer a question in one of these things called "forums" --intended to help people with questions--in a nice and helpful manner. Weird concept, probably crazy, but just sayin'.
Don't tell me I need no manual save, let ME decide that. If save scumming breaks the spirit of the game and all that, then let those who feel that way use your checkpoints only. Meanwhile, rl--wife, kid, dog, work, friends, etc.-- interrupts me regularly and I'm not interested in repeatedly replaying stuff I've already done cause you can't be bothered to accommodate a probably significant portion of your potential players by offering a manual save option.
This looked like a great game til I ran across this. I had read a couple of posts ahead of purchase about the save system but evidently misunderstood them. I'm playing sp off-line so there's no reason there shouldn't be a save file stored in AppData or somewhere. Finding there isn't means it's refund time for me. I don't enjoy the continual aggravation of worrying about where the next autosave/bonfire are going to be vs. whenever I'll have to quit the game.
But what about when the game crashes and you don’t get to log out? It would be nice to know I didn’t just lose 4hours of progress because the game crashed. Maybe an auto save when you touch a home flame or something just so you aren’t inclined to save before battle and there is still the feeling of not having a manual save but also saves players from the pain of losing so much progress because the game had an issue.
Any placed altar works as the return point when the saves loaded up again
There are interim saves made, not just those on logging off. Crashing doesn't trigger a save but on the rare times I have had a crash there wasn't a huge amount of redo to be redone.
If you need to go afk for a moment, go inside a building and close the door behind you. If you're in the family way with regular interruptions being a normal thing then adjust playstyle and use the mechanics of the game by placing an altar down beforehand.
Even with a save system the shroud should be blocking it just as it does for fast travel.
Just be aware that this will teleport you to the last known safety point for your next session, which is probably why it's not obvious that it is "saving" automatically.
It's not bad game design. Maybe it's a necessity in a game where you can't fast travel to a safe place but like Mr Fibble said, if you get regular interruptions (family for example), all you need to do is craft an altar and travel back to base, or even change the time of day you play. If you're in the Shroud and can't find a way out, oh well, if you die you'll be able to retrieve your backpack eventually. If it's an emergency? Well, then it's kind of minor in comparison.
