You have to unlock that feature later in the game via one of the crafting NPCs, it is called magic chests if I remember correctly.

No, this is no LINK feature (you open one and see all chest content), it is a "craft from chests" feature the magic chests provide.

Correct. There is no linking the chests into one giant pool, which I would actually like to see now that it is mentioned. Crafting from chests is a thing though once you place an item into a 'magic' chest.

And the first magic chest is now available from your starting workbench, as of last patch (it is on mine, now)

So you should be able to use this feature from the very begining of the game (or pretty close to it; maybe you have to get your first shroud core or something for the craftnig recipe to be learned)
