The Beginning Absolutely Sucks
So, the game locks you into a rather small starting zone, forcing you to upgrade through beginning gear and finally unlock a grapple hook before you can proceed. Problem was that the game doesn't really stress how essential this hook is and it can cause massive pacing issues.

I played with one other friend and it took us almost four hours to escape that part of the game. We spent our metal scrap and plant fibers on other things. Nice armor, weapons, bandages (oh God, the bandages/ healing problem is a whole separate post) and a solid looking base. It was only after exploring our little spot that we found out that we were basically trapped.

We needed both plant fiber and metal scraps for the hook. But we had already looted basically all of the bushes we could find. And, after taking to Google to see how the hell we acquire more metal scraps, we had cleared out all the enemy camps we could find.

It was only after searching around for a solid hour or more for bushes and figuring out that we could destroy metal objects in the world for metal scrap, that we finally got enough for two grapple hooks.

Couple that with slow, SLOW leveling, and the pacing at the beginning is mindnumbingly dull. I hope the game picks up now that we have unlocked the open world, but as it stands, Enshrouded's version of Breath of the Wild's plateau already sucked the initial hype we had right out of us.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I remember it from the demo or alpha or whatever it was where they limited your play time. Game was boring AF, but I leaning towards trying it now because I'm bored AF lol....not so bored that I'd reduce myself to a goofy pokemon game but tinkering with reshade mods and this will pass the time.

You can just bust down the wall with Tools. The first real use of the hook is in the first Tower

I imagine the starting area would really suck for a party rationing resources. The amount of ♥♥♥♥ you have to get to build the structures is way ott, and the inability to craft from boxed resources ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blows.

The game is cool as ♥♥♥♥ when you get out of the first area, but the early grind didn't need to be this horrendous. And the less said about having factory crafting take minutes on end per item the better

The developer said if you restart your game or maybe that was server it will repopulate everything again. So you can farm back the area you farmed if you restart.

So the solution is exiting and reentering the game. 10/10 gameplay.
Sounds like you just want to spawn in with a rocket launcher and start blasting. Man, the attention span of kids these days. You do not need the grappling hook to get around that first bridge. you can go down into the shroud.

Wanna avoid bandages? Eat grapes  Last longer and heal for more in the long run. You can also use both for a super regen effect.

Make a pick axe and make steps down? People can't be this stupid.

All the metal canisters where the blacksmith dude is - break them with your melee weapon and repair at the anvil out the door. 3 metal per canister. there's a ton outside that area as well. You should have no metal issues. Also the tower drops plates in the vases - got tons there.

It literally tells you that you need a grappling hook to go across the very first bridge you come across before you enter the shroud for the first time. Sounds like you just don't read text which is your own fault. Plus when you unlock the blacksmith he says craft a glider and the grappling hook is right under it in the craft bench.

As soon as I came outside I ran down and saw a bridge, that bridge showed a thing where you could use a grapple hook, so i went back to base and did one up. It was very obvious right away that it was going to be a very key item to make. There is even a little bit of writing near the bridge and the spot where you can use a grapple hook, that made me think right away "Oh I should prioritize this one". They really can't make it anymore obvious unless you need a questline for it for some strange reason.

After I had a weapon, an axe for wood and a pickaxe for stones, I went for the grappling hook, since it was so obvious you need it. Was one of the very first items I crafted before going out to explore. just bash a few things that give you metal, super easy.

Instead of grappling across the bridge you can head down through the shroud and back up armed with a basic sense of direction and emerge time to spare.

Quite a bit to explore although you will hit a point where the grapple is vital to progress.
