I found some empty cages that I dismantled and finally got some scrap metal.

The most reliable source of scrap metal i found is on the guys guarding the camps, outside of the shroud.

you dismantle metal from metalic parts like carts with metal cages.
Once you got scrap metal you can melt them into metal plates.

I've managed to find a decent amount in the chambers where you find the companions that join your base.

Just need to break all the pods in the rooms, they take a fair bit of damage but they reliably drop metal scraps?

By dismantle, you mean smash to pieces with a sword right? Or is there a better way to dismantle that yields more salvage?

As said: Dismantle iron decoration like these cages.

Even faster imho: Kill scavengers.

In the early game i needed to grind for metal scraps, too, but only little later in the game it's not really required anymore, because you get them basically everywhere.
Once you visit some scavanger settlements, various quests point you to anyway, you'll leave them with stacks of metal scraps.

Use pickaxe to break ALL THE THINGS. Scavenger camps seem to have the most metal, so find one you like, clear it, reset it, and clear it again. If you're early game, Rookmoore is a good spot. Later, any scav camp will do.

I get tons from Scaveger camps. I have chests full of sraps.

Mid game I found it very useful to port back to Cinder Vault. All those incubation dealies are 3 metal each. They take a lot of smacking, it gets easier with better picks. From there a quick glider drop to Longkeep's well for water, then run NW down hill and glide across that bit of shroud to the Raider camp there. Can't recall the name. Each Raider drops metal, and there are scraps everywhere, as well as two blue potions sitting on the tables, AND another well.

Something like 65 or 70 scraps per run. I never counted closely. A bunch.

“Some people wanna see the word burn” just follow this philosophy and treat every barrel, bag, cart, vase, enemy as a resource. be the best hoarder/mass murderer you can be and you will have metal scraps for days on end. “Loot everything” Ps: almost all the humanoid enemies have scrap :)
