They act as a tech stage unlock, allowing you to progress to the next step of crafting. The blacksmith teaches you how to make a forge and use coal and metals and unlocks armors and your grapple and other metalworks and weapons. You can't build all those without him. As far as housing them their needs are like Terraria.

They're currently putting together a roadmap for EA as well and want to know what people are interested in.
It's a voxel based game so it seems pretty hard to implement. Maybe they'll consider it as it's one of the most upvoted features. ^^
Btw. I added NPC management as a suggestion, but it has to be approved first.
What about player and npc interactions with water on top of that? Are you sure you have any idea about the thing you're talking about?
New World has an insane budget and you still cant swim in it. Its been like 2 years and you still just walk on the bottom of bodies of water.
I guess its not so easy to get water to fit in every game.
Seeing a bunch people standing around is little bit boring. They should add life to the game instead.
