Disable teleportation?
I was watching the dev videos on this game and it looked really interesting, but then I got to the point where the dev said you can just teleport back to your base (presumably for free) after completing an exploration.

That's a big disappointment - will this be a toggleable option? Random, unexplained teleportation really breaks immersion in survival games. At least Valheim made you build portals, which aren't free, require setup work, and can't transport metals.

I really like to explore the vastness of a world, and a major part of that is, well, having things take time to get around. anyone else agree?

Teleportation is completely disabled in the Shroud, our most dangerous zones in the game. That said we plan on adding more difficulty options in the future, so perhaps we can eventually add one to remove the ability to teleport if players are into that sort of thing :)

The article I read said: "As the story progresses, players access steeds and mystical portals, enabling faster travel".

You dont have to use them of course... I guess that makes them toggleable by your desire.
I do love to see the scenery myself ... but there seems to be plenty of magic in the game so its not like its completely uncalled for. I do hope we have to earn each of the portals by combat or such; seems likely.

Yeah, exactly. Just like fast travel in Skyrim or dozens of other open world games, you can always choose not to use it. That's been the very essence of what created Survival Modes in games.

Games would not last long in the current gaming environment if you made people walk back. People just dont have the patience. I do agree with the original poster about free teleportation though it totally feels like a cheat.

what if they dont add the option to disable it, what if you can fast travel back to base no matter what? you can just dont use it if you dont want to, you can ignore the feature. are you that kind of person that is weak minded and will use it cause it's there no matter how much you say you dont want to? is there someone forcing you to use it?

Well, just don't use it, then.

I think maybe the demo craze back in October has spoiled the OP's point of view on this - The entire map is huge - there was a limited play area for the open demo back then. The *need* for teleport in an area that limited might seem unnecessary.

Imagine playing a couple months from now when you have the map very well explored but even then haven't seen all of it. You're *really* going to glean entertainment from spending 20 - 30 minutes of playing time running back to your base? Basically covering ground you already know and doing nothing interesting while having to manage your stamina as you sprint as much as you can - doesn't sound like big fun.

You do have to travel and explore to get to new places, that's fun and interesting. Having to drudge over hill and dale to get back to known content - meh not so much for this player.

being able to teleport in a game filled with magic and monsters is immersion breaking?

If I host a multiplayer world I would like to make this a mandatory option. Pretty much only way to accomplish this is forcing it. Also, this is the kind of thing that it's easier to teleport but less fun. So you kind of have to enable it in game rules or players will always take the easiest route regardless of if it provides the best game experience.

If it's explained, no. Think Terraria's teleportation mirror you have to find. From what I saw it's just something you do, which makes me think it's just to save time and thus not immersive. Even games with magic have internal consistency.

This is using the assumption people posses the will to not use it. I'll wager nine times out of ten people who disagree with a feature will still use it if said feature is providing some small benefit at the moment of a willpower containment breach.

Then don't use it..?
tinsmith33 Jan 23, 2024 @ 5:42pm
During demo you could only teleport back to your base/house , and could only have 2 such places .
So it is not something ground braking .

Your time is your's to waste (or not) as you choose.
Mavor Jan 23, 2024 @ 6:46pm
I don't see any issue here - if you dislike an optional game feature - choose not to utilize it. Simple. Doesn't require a discussion.
