The game tries to find as many players close to your level, your rank and/or MMR before filling the match up with bots.
Franky i think it will take more time for more F2P players to try out ranked to beef up the playerpool. Before F2P the ranked playerpool was very small compared to more popular games. If they immediately removed it, queues would be super long and/or the lowest and highest ranks are just thrown together which makes for a horrible experience.
At least on Showdown, you won't be partied with bots. Same with Spirit Well.
For new players, do the Advanced Practice mode to get an idea of how higher rank games go. I think they did a pretty good job with it to give new players an idea how to attack, defend, and combo. The training only lets you use a limited number of weapons so you will still need to master the other weapons since each one acts different.
