Also, most people dont know that your PC is by default only using 1 gig of virtual memory. You need to tell it how much ram you have installed.
So if youre getting memory crashes, here is the fix.
right click my computer-
more options-
properties-
advance system settings-
advanced tab-
performance settings-
advanced-
click the change button under virtual memory-
click custom size -
and change your virtual memory setting of your used ram to match the ram you have installed on your PC.
Restart your PC an wallah!
Tip - I have 64 gb and I set it to 60 gb virtual memory instead of the default 1 gig. So Im using 60gb in my programs I have open(this includes games like this one) and It leaves 4gb for other stuff running in the background while I play. Plenty for both.
So it would look like this - for 64 gb of ram - initial 10000, maximum 60000
You should also notice a HUGE boost in PC performance in games especially.
Give it a try. Im sure youll be happy you did.
Youre welcome
What is a swap file?
A swap file is a file on your computer's hard drive that is used as virtual memory. It is an extension of the computer's physical memory random-access memory (RAM) and acts as a temporary storage space for data that doesn't fit in the RAM. When your system's memory is running low, the operating system moves less frequently used data from the RAM to the swap file, making room for more important data in the RAM.
Why is a swap file necessary?
A swap file is necessary because it allows your computer to handle more data than it can fit into the physical memory random-access memory (RAM). When your RAM is filled with active programs and data, the operating system needs to free up space to accommodate new data. The swap file provides extra space by temporarily storing data that is not immediately needed, which helps prevent your system from crashing due to insufficient memory.
****************************
If your game is using up to much of system memory ( because you don't have enough physical memory ) and game start using Window swap file on the hard drive, your game going run slow or crash.
Virtual memory is a concept: it’s how your operating system gives programs the illusion of having their own private, large chunk of memory — even if the physical RAM is smaller.
Swap file (or swap space) is one way virtual memory is implemented. When your RAM gets full, the OS moves inactive data from RAM to disk (into the swap file or swap partition) to free up RAM for active tasks.
So in short:
Virtual memory = the whole system managing memory beyond physical RAM.
Swap file = the storage space on disk used to support virtual memory.
Have a great day!
Think of it like this:
Virtual memory is the entire addressing and management system — a clever trick your OS and CPU use to make programs feel like they’ve got all the memory they want.
The swap file is just part of the backup plan when real memory runs out — it's like using your hard drive as emergency RAM, but slower.
To say virtual memory is the same is a swap file is like saying a steering wheel is the whole car — it’s important, but it’s just one piece of the system.
I'm a Microsoft developer, so I tried to explain in lamens terms. Hope this helps
If this going on, you might want get another ram stick for your computer? Or time to close your Firefox with a 100+ tabs open to free up some physical memory ( about 3 GB of ram right now ).
Um, apparently you didnt understand what I said. The swap drive is only a backup to your virtual and physical RAM, AKA memory.
Thats why my fix above would be appropriate.
Physical memory and virtual memory has nothing to do with the swap file other than backing up that memory if your PC isnt allocated enough virtual memory by default.
Physical memory installed as you call it - or the hardware RAM installed is what matters. Virtual memory is just an illusion to your programs to fool it into thinking it has plenty of room. You need to max it out to fool it more if you dont have a PC built for gaming.
When you dont allocate enough virtual memory, the program calling for it MIGHT crash, depending on your hardware/software conflicts. Simple as that.
Most gaming PCs are set up as such that virtual memory will never crash the PC because of coding etc.
Such examples ; Lenovo Legion or Alienware PCs, they are known to almost never have virtual memory crashes because they are built for gaming.
It's because coding in those gaming PCs tells Windows that it doesnt only have 1 GB of virtual memory like a regular PC. Obviously if you have a PC built for gaming and not just an upgraded regular PC, then my instructions wont apply.
An example of why you would need my instructions above - You have a normal inspiron(or whatever they call their midline these days, XPS maybe). Those PCs are powerful but not built for gaming. So a dell PC that is not build for gaming with just upgraded graphics card and RAM would fall into this category of running out of virtual memory regualrly unless they change the setting I listed above.
But if you dont have a gaming PC which is what Im guesssing about the OP, then they should follow the above instructions if they have memory dumps.
The swap drive is just a backup to your hard drive because you didnt allocate enough virtual memory, which, yes, you would make your PC slower by not allocating enough RAM that is installed. Directions are above.
****The main idea here is to NEVER have memory dumped onto your hardrive as a swap file - Because this is what causes memory dumps and crashes in the first place.****Youre thinking Windows 98 with this style of an OS relying on a swap file. And only allocating 3 GB to virtual memory when you dont own a gaming PC will give you more problems then its worth because its not enough for 64GB installed on that said PC.
Whoever you learned this from is old and hasnt learned Windows 7 yet, nevermind Windows 11 haha. Just saying bro. Tell them to be quiet, whoever is spilling this BS around is outdated by decades. Its ancient.
Cant tell if your trolling or just not reading yet. But I'll know by the next response. LOL
Anyway, youre welcome to everyone else LMAO.
Have an amazing night everyone:)
