Styraco Trouble?
through my first playthrough i really struggled to get anything done because my styracosaurus wasn't happy enough for me to ride. i gave it everything, food, space, biome and two pstiaccosaurus for company, but still did not let me ride and for most of it i was still lost until the demo expired and the effort was lost, i enjoy the game but the finances and the very tedious requirements made the game hard to relax in

I was about to make my own thread on this myself. I haven't even been able to ride my gallimimus that the game has you tame as part of the tutorial because it STILL doesn't trust me enough for a saddle, even though I've been doing everything I can to keep it happy since I got it, much less the Styracosaurus.

Not having a way to gauge the dinosaur's trust even slightly is a huge problem. I thought it was the heart with the gauge around it, but that's just the dinosaur's happiness which drops like a brick the moment the pen needs shoveling out.

And it's not even the fact that trust takes so long to build that's the problem. The problem is specifically that it takes too long to build to even have other dinosaurs to ride before the end of the demo.

If it's going to take so long to build the demo's gameplay period should be like three or four months, otherwise the dino's trust should build up very quickly.

I had the same problem you guys were having, and it took me a while to figure it out. When you hold the journal and hover over the dino, it will tell you their thoughts. My styraco said it wanted a valley theme to their pen. You can do this by buying valley flowers at Marlos, or by upgrading their dreamstone to a valley dreamstone. Once he was in there for a day, he became a helper!

I had nothing like that. The only thoughts my dinos were having were things already done like 'They enjoyed the treat I fed them!" or so on.

There were no hints for how what to do going forward, just thoughts on what I'd done for them already.

Further, I upgraded all their sleeping spots just in case to make them happier. Didn't do anything either.

I had the same problem too, I pet them, clean out the pen, gave the treats and make sure the food bowl was topped up. I think based on how many days pass but not very clear. Eventually, I received notification Styracosaurus is now a helper.

I agree, I think it may be partially based on how many days you have them? both the Gallimimus and the Psittacosaurus I got on the same day procced helper at the same time, but still waiting on the Styraco I got later

If I understand things correctly from my playthrough, here's a good way to earn dino trust.

After taming it, bring it back to the ranch and tell it to stay in a pen that is large enough for it, has a dreamstone for it, and a trough with food it likes in it (herbi food for now). For Styraco, put it with 2 other dinos in the pen (for me I just expanded Lucky's initial plot and had the tutorial Galli in it too). Pet it at least once every ranch day, use the shovel to clean up any poop you see in the pens each morning, and make sure it has food. It might take a few ranch days, but as long as it stays happy, it should only take like what...maybe 3-4 ranch days for it to become a helper. Maybe 5.

I dunno if this helps or not either, but also take it for walks! Tell it to follow you with the flute and while you are out looking for dreamstones or doing other non-village tasks, having the dino following you gives it exp and maybe trust! My Galli became a helper and the next day or two after, my Styraco become one. You get the notice as soon as a new day starts.

So after not getting my Sty to Helper for 5 days now, decided to test what was happening.

1) Not sure if intentional or a bug, but if there's poop in their pen, it takes their happiness WAY down. Not sure how low (maybe -70%?), but after a few days of gaining trust, woke up to about -40% Unhappiness. Nothing you can do about this, as it's basically just RNG if there's poop when you wake up. Removing the poop with the Shovel will take them back into Happy, but to like... 10% Happiness. Days of progress lost.

2) All of the following help, to different degrees. I logged the trust difference between each of these actions, here's the results:
  • Daily Nose Boop: +10%
  • Daily Friend Call: +15%
  • Daily Walkies: +25% (Flute to "Follow Me" and take them off Ranch)
  • Daily Poffin (Juicy): +20%
  • Daily Forage (Clover): +10% or more (I hit cap with it)
  • (Possible Daily [any unique food item])
  • Preferred Biome (Valley): +15% (via updating all of the Dreamstone to Valley type. I think Marlo flowers would also do it. You'll know your pen switched biomes by the announcement + flowers everywhere. Since this isn't repeatable, not sure what would happen if the biome was already set up as desired.)

How do you get a juicy puffin? I can only buy the crunchy ones.

Juicy is available after a quest when you try to tame a dino and it fails because they don't like the crunchy one. Have to go to town and complete the quest with puffin person.

Thanks! Oh gosh, I've already failed at taming the same type of dino twice with the crunchy poffin and the baker doesn't have a quest for me. I wonder if it's a bug.

If the baker doesn't have a quest for you, try talking to Mari? I think she may have dialogue that will lead to it.

This should be marked as the answer because it's exactly what was needed. Thanks a ton!

I found a happiness calculator through the official discord - I don't know if this is fully up to date or if it's based on data from the demo version, but it lists all of the things that can affect happiness (most of them are covered above, but one of which is having a much bigger pen than the dino demands - the other is "uncluttered the pen", I'm not sure what that means, clearing debris maybe?).

My styro has had a perfect pen, but he *still* isn't a helper despite having it for over 2 weeks.
I have had a ceolo get helper within a day, like wtf is wrong with this thing
