Not having a way to gauge the dinosaur's trust even slightly is a huge problem. I thought it was the heart with the gauge around it, but that's just the dinosaur's happiness which drops like a brick the moment the pen needs shoveling out.
And it's not even the fact that trust takes so long to build that's the problem. The problem is specifically that it takes too long to build to even have other dinosaurs to ride before the end of the demo.
If it's going to take so long to build the demo's gameplay period should be like three or four months, otherwise the dino's trust should build up very quickly.
I had nothing like that. The only thoughts my dinos were having were things already done like 'They enjoyed the treat I fed them!" or so on.
There were no hints for how what to do going forward, just thoughts on what I'd done for them already.
Further, I upgraded all their sleeping spots just in case to make them happier. Didn't do anything either.
After taming it, bring it back to the ranch and tell it to stay in a pen that is large enough for it, has a dreamstone for it, and a trough with food it likes in it (herbi food for now). For Styraco, put it with 2 other dinos in the pen (for me I just expanded Lucky's initial plot and had the tutorial Galli in it too). Pet it at least once every ranch day, use the shovel to clean up any poop you see in the pens each morning, and make sure it has food. It might take a few ranch days, but as long as it stays happy, it should only take like what...maybe 3-4 ranch days for it to become a helper. Maybe 5.
I dunno if this helps or not either, but also take it for walks! Tell it to follow you with the flute and while you are out looking for dreamstones or doing other non-village tasks, having the dino following you gives it exp and maybe trust! My Galli became a helper and the next day or two after, my Styraco become one. You get the notice as soon as a new day starts.
1) Not sure if intentional or a bug, but if there's poop in their pen, it takes their happiness WAY down. Not sure how low (maybe -70%?), but after a few days of gaining trust, woke up to about -40% Unhappiness. Nothing you can do about this, as it's basically just RNG if there's poop when you wake up. Removing the poop with the Shovel will take them back into Happy, but to like... 10% Happiness. Days of progress lost.
2) All of the following help, to different degrees. I logged the trust difference between each of these actions, here's the results:
Juicy is available after a quest when you try to tame a dino and it fails because they don't like the crunchy one. Have to go to town and complete the quest with puffin person.
This should be marked as the answer because it's exactly what was needed. Thanks a ton!
