Were you trying to use the journal to complete the study dino quest? Instead, you just need to approach the dino and a prompt should appear telling you what to do (for example, press the A button). However, the Devs are aware of the confusion around this quest from previous comments on our discord, and are looking to make this more clear for players!
First of the wild dinosaur needs to be asleep. (Most wont be that helpful.)
If you can't find a resting one, you need to use the flute to mimic a friend call of the dinosaur, then calm it until it falls alseep.
Then aproach slowly and check the dino with empty hands (= without using the journal).
That could be a bit better explained in game.
You need to study any wild Styracosaurus for the quest, so make sure you're not approaching Stys you've already befriended.
You can complete the "study [dino]" quests regardless of how many you've already befriended: I have 3 Stys on my ranch and just completed a "Study Styracosaurus" quest today.
