Firstly this game has perma progression so the more you play, the more stuff (cards) you unlock and you also get ressources to perma upgrade stats.
That said, the starting char relies in combos. That means hit often with weak attacks to trigger vulnerable and then use your active (bottom left) to deal big damage.
I might be doing something wrong as you unlock the cards can you build a new starter deck after you die and start a new run? I don't have much time in the game it's mostly afk hours while I'm working. I just unlocked the summoner not real long ago.
Summoner is the first class I've beat the game with. You are right that you start with a fresh deck but have the options to obtain the cards you unlock.
I'm with you on the being on your own against numbers, part of the reason I like Summoner so much, just beat the final boss with a Wyrm Summoner.
Note that your build gets stronger as you get more cards in a given run (aka you add more synergy to your deck).
If you want an easy source of big damage with a ranged class then Zealot is your go-to.
After figuring it out I was like " Damn this class is OP, easiest class! ". It was a funny journey.
Same here with the melee classes, I found the Wyrdhunter weak when I started.
Then I thought of trying out the weekly event and the class for it was the Necromancer. I liked that one since I made more progress for the first time. The Sentinel was interesting but failed with it too. The Summoner is the first class I beat the game with as it was the easiest to play. Just have a couple of Golems as protection and then summon an Abomination or Wyrm for attacking. Buff/Level them up until fight ends and continue attacking. Talking about Difficulty 1 of course, when I was still a noob.
Berserker was the next class I enjoyed playing. All the HP sacrifices that didn't make sense for me earlier, made sense once I picked the Beserker. Lose HP for max HP? Sure I'll take it.
The most difficult for me was the Blood Made, no wonder only a few people got the achievement of reaching lvl 20 with it. But I found a way eventually.
I really liked the Necromancer but the first time I played I didn't notice that the Lich has only 25hp so I lost a few times because of that. It is actually disappointing because transforming into a Lich should make the player stronger not weaker. I mean it is the class Ultimate ability, cmon. Eventually I realized that I shouldn't count too much on the Lich form and focus on just using the minions. Basically turn Abominations into ethereal forms asap and buff them. Having barrier on you helps too.
By the way the Necromancer is a bit special in my opinion because it has more visual and sound effects than the other classes. They obviously put more work into the art direction of that class.
I've tried 2 of the melee classes they both felt weak to me compared to the archers and summoners. Block and relying on stuns feels inefficient and less reliable than stacking armor and barrier, in my opinion. Enemies that do multiple attacks soak up blocks even if they're only hitting for 1 damage.
I have tried getting them up to level 7 or 8 real fast then sacrificing them, but the scaling still feels off.
Lich form is good but I haven't gotten it to be amazing.
edit : Of course to get the right passives and cards you also need a little RNG luck, some classes imo heavily depend on that.
I don't get it either feels weaker than the other 2 summoners to me. Summon a level 4 Wyrm and it does 8 damage against a monster, with zero armor, then if you sacrifice it, it gets bumped up to amazing 15 damage wtf is that about? Takes forever to kill anything. Lich form feels kind of underwhelming
Eventually Left Hand Path and Right Hand Path (and probably some other things) made the Lich pretty powerful.
Seems like a high skill ceiling class, maybe the hardest in the game to master, along with Berserker? I don't know. anyways, ya Lich form can be useful and is definitely a cool mechanic I give the devs props there...but ya I think you have to build around it over time with the right card additions.
I hated Sentinel, entirely because of the flip mechanic. Summoner was much more fun, though I only tried it once before unlocking and being charmed by Pathfinder.
