Do you start at level 1?
The first time you can control your party. They are at level 80+
And after that, you play as someone at level 20+

that has been a running theme with this series since Zero. The prologue usually starts with a segment that takes place midway through the game and then the game goes back in time to catch up to that moment. I cant quite recall but in this game I think its with the Liberl characters doesnt something in crossbell. You wont start at lv 1 though because the class seven characters have a history from the previous games.

I think in CS 4, with the main characters you do a prologue dungeon at about level 20, and after that everyone gets kicked up to level 50 or so.

It actually doesn't matter as it is balanced as if it was 'level 1' even if start number is different.

Trails games often do this and it's a bit annoying. There's always a bit of a disconnect between mechanics & story.

I also dislike it when you absolutely destroy a boss easily, but then the characters act like they just barely survived.
When you gain more character than the new class 7, theyll go up to 50 and then whenever a new lad joins the crew and you havent farmed their higher level will boost you in leveling quite a bit. My Kurt was 86 and blank 100 and now Kurt is almost 100 as well while blank only leveled a bit to 105.

How is a story driven game supposed to react to something like that? Have different outcomes depending on how an individual does a battle?

Trails has done it before with certain fights. Extra points if you beat boss within a certain number of rounds, etc
