I also use Kurt a fair bit here and there. I have him built to lay down status/delay effects. Works fairly well in my experience. I also like to bring Emma along whenever I am expecting boss battles. Her S-Craft comes in clutch when those bosses try to dish out their own S-Crafts only to get hit in the face with their own attacks.
And there are just so many characters and combos to try, but it's hard to utilize all of them lol.
Rean, Tita,Musse, and Emma. Tita is just insane. With that main quartz she has being able to use a single item for AOE is just insane. Not to mention she has the highest attk and defenses out of anyone thus far. Also not to mention her godly HP. She a tank, an attacker and a godly healer all in one. She does 11k damage per normal hit. I'm never removing her unless the game makes me.
Rean is mostly useful for his Orders really. His damage is so-so but late game I give him quartz that has 10% deathblow, good with his AoE skill that hit twice. But he's also quite tanky so I always put him in front.
Laura with Minotaurus and Dominion, easily reach 20-40k damage per hit.
Emma with subquartz that use more EP for more dmg easily reach 30-100k damage per arts. And her main quartz restore the EP to full.
Machias with subquartz that aggro the enemy and some strongest Defense quartz and equipment.
Kurt and Fie with Sirius and strongest Evade quartz plus Rage.
Ash and Randy with subquartz that gives 140% crit damage plus some Hit quartz and crit accessory.
Most others are either healer with Canon subquartz, arts user, or support characters equipped with Recuria, Heat Up, or Earth Pulse.
Only character I don't know how to setup is Sara. Her skill and stats is so useless since III so I don't use her unless required by story.
But if the placements were ultimately up to me, I'd have:
Rean, the MC and required party member and all-around DPS
Fie, my favourite gril and cute af dodge tank
Laura, with her incredible ATK
Emma, my artillery arts cannon. Stock her up with AT-reducing quartz and accessories and watch her bombard bosses into oblivion. (for boss fights only)
Juna, at the game's end, her Warhammer order becomes as useful as it was in breaking enemies quickly like in CS3
Other additions to my dream team include:
Jusis, for his Noble Rise and broken Platinum Shield
Alisa, if I really need to spam S-crafts
Musse, my water based artillery arts cannon
I'd also try to rotate in other characters like Kurt, Tita and Duvalie. The other Class VII males get too little love from me unfortunately. It's not my fault the girls are experts in their fields.
But the main takeaway is: anyone can be a good combatant. Even Elliot. Especially Elliot. You just need to gear them right.
Doesn't rly help this cast is absolutely massive so I just end up constituting comps left and right especially when the team splits up
Rean as Melee Dps (with MInotauros, just gotta love the whomp)
Kurt as Evasion Tank with Automatic Crit Retaliation.
Juna as Allrounder (Melee, Buffs, Heal)
Altina as Support (Buffs, Scan, Debuff, Heal)
Ash as stand-in for Rean and later on as Brave Order supplier.
Yeah I generally used a melee setup, because its easier to maintain BP that way.
On my second playthrough I will probably play around more, would have been awesome if you could use all characters all the time then, too bad they didn't include that option.
Rean ofc, as first attacker with emblem MQ and Domination, usually trigger link-attack if not killed weak mobs in instant.
Laura/Juna, as Rean link partner to burst/break higher level enemies/boss, I build Laura using highest STR in equipment and quartz, as for Juna I focus on highest breaker DMG (with minotauros and skuld MQ). Ah almost forgot to mention, Juna has very good all-around craft, she can break defense, add BP and speed-up team turn. she's almost permanent is my squad.
Altina, for detector and support, I give her defensive MQ and equip, so she rarely die, also I put Lost Art Quartz Grail Thelas in case sh*t happens.
Musse, for magic DPS and nuker (with offensive Lost Arts equipped)
My favorite Back Line Support :
Jusis : for his platinum shield
Emma : for her absolute reflect ultimate and great magic DPS
Elliot : emergency revive/heal with his ultimate, but I rarely use him after I got Grail Thelas
Alisa : heavenly gift and additional magic DPS, but again I only use her when there is vacant spot, which is rather rare because we are forced to use certain characters most of the time during story line.
That's my personal favorite squad.
I never liked magic arts, I always found it useless, pure DPS is better to me. If there is any advice of magic arts, I take it, I would like to change my mind on it
Arts is pure and ridicilous dps.
If you equip the Chars right you can burn almost every enemy
Musse/Alisa, Arts Order - let the 150k Crits flying.
