Why would it be a joke? Not every game has multiplayer, or needs it. I think it would improve the endgame but it's certainly not necessary to enjoy the game for what it is right now.

Probably coming in a future update from what I have heard. They are working on balance and bug atm.

Yes the Pokemon games had it, but they cost twice as much as this game does.

Well, let's say Pokémon made its advertisement around being able to exchange pokémons, especially because of 2 different versions in order to catch'em all. Once they did connections between games possible, they kinda had to make a versus mode available. I agree it's weird in such game, but here, there is no such thing as having to catch'em all, but to finish the story.
I do believe if they couldn't patch games, they would have release one directly, but as nowadays, we can have updates, they may felt free to release the game 1rst before finishing it.
Personnaly, I'm making my teams like if a pvp mode will come. For the sake and pleasure of theorycrafting, I guess.
