Substance Painter 2020

Substance Painter 2020

What is the real cost of Substance Painter??
Hi i have a few questions before i start to use this software.

The cost of this product is $126.00 dollars on steam,
First of all Is this a one time cost?

Then,
if i use this software for a game and make a fantastic game with revenue from $100K to $100M.
Will i be forced to always pay $999.00/year forever and ever?
Or will i only pay for as long as i decide to continue to use the software?

Reason i ask is technically the game textures will have been made with Substance Painter forever,
So do i pay to continue to use the existing game textures made in substance painter inside my game?
If i dont want to pay this cost do i have to remove any existing materials made from substance painter from my game?

Or do i pay to continue to use substance painter if i for example want to update the game?
Or do i pay to continue to use substance painter if i want to use substance painter for a new game or expantion?

Were is the line here?

It's a one time cost and you can use the software for ever but you'll only get updates for a year. You don't have to pay some kind of subscription cost because your textures made with the program are still in a game, that's crazy.

Are you 100% sure of that @graspee AKA pango or do you guess it works like that?
because the homepage looks abit diffrent to what you explain, It tells that there are Revenue on every level you earn,

Revenue under $100K = $219 Yearly
Revenue from $100K to $100M = $990 Yearly.

do you have any links to show me that it works like you claim?
I just want to be completely sure what the terms to use this software are before i use it.

And thanks for you answer.

The licenses terms on the website are different than on Steam. Steam licenses are for people/entities making less than $100K / year and are a one time purchase.
Pango is an "entity". Paint me variegated with a metalic sheen!

Hi @Jerc !

Okey! so there's two separate version of Substance Painter,

The first version here on steam is a licence that has a one time fee,
but with this version you are not allowed to create a game that earn more income then $100k/year.

The Second version is the subscribtion on the homepage that has monthly fees.

1. What happens if you use this steam licence and start earning above that number (Above $100k/year.) , will you need to start paying revenue then?

2. If you use any of the version, and create a game with higher earning then the set number (Above $100k/year.) for how long will you maintain the revenue fee?
A: For as long as i use the textures created with SP inside my game?
B: For as long as i plan to create a new game or expantion using Substance Painter?
C: For as long as i plan to update my game content?
D: Are there anyway to stop this revenue fee once it started?

Reason i ask is i wonder if i will be forced to always pay $999.00/year forever and ever? or for as long as i want to continue to use the software, and if so at what terms?
And just want to know this before i purchase this licence and starts to use it on my game.

Thanks for your response!

The revenue limit is linked to your use of the software, not to the use of assets you have already created with it. So if your game crosses the $100k limit, you will only need to switch to the Pro license if you keep creating new content for the game like DLC or a sequel. If you stop creating content altogether you can of course stop your subscription.

i would hold your horses as the new version for 2021 should be coming out by the end of the month or the next, regardless buying the license here for the 2020 version at this point wouldn't be wise. if you really need to use it now i would use the free trial, then subscribe for a month of two till the new version is out.

Best of luck!

So it means for every new version they release on steam, we need to buy it separately?

Once a year if you want to get the updates yes. Old versions carry on working though.

You get to keep the year's version you bought indefinitely. It just doesn't get any updates or features after the year is over. Also the next year's version is on sale for 50% off I believe for owners of previous versions on steam.
