Now, you can go tens of thousands of battles and not see a single 'special' monster.
Theoretically that could be true but I think it is unlikely, in my experience I have over 200 but less than 300 battles and I have run across 2-3 of the specials/starters in addition to the one I chose. Each one is only found in a certain map area, so it may take you 50-100 battles in the same map to get one but there aren't that many. I haven't specifically been looking for any of them and have run across them just while leveling normally. I have no doubt that trying to complete everything 100% would take a long time and some luck, but that is true of any game where there are 300+ things to catch.
- capture rate only sucks early on, since you get gold for wild encounters you end up with way more gold than you could ever spend on nexotraps... the only times ive struggled catching something is because ive been too scared that anything i hit it with would kill it so i was just throwing at full health
- if you do kill everything whilst hunting youre gonna end up severely overlevelled; recommended to swap team around a lot (evolve stuff)
- mega rares arent as rare as they sound
- specials are rarer than mega rares
- you can find a legendary early on (i found at level 8), put up a little bit of a fight to catch but still less than 8 traps
- i actually had more trouble with certain rares (cavel and clonkey in particular) than mega rares/specials... and i have a theory as to why: mega rares/specials can spawn anywhere in that area (and often throughout multiple areas) whereas rares seem to grass patch specific, like in one route i found multiple perchara (mega rare) and blizo (special) before i found a single cavel (rare), probably because theres two types of grass and cavel only spawn in one (whilst the mega rare and special spawn in both)

green patch in one screen; brown patch in the other
At any rate, if you do find you're having trouble catching the rare guys and dont want to brute force it, wait until you get that item and you might have better luck.
Personally, i went with the brute force option anyways and got plenty of cash for items that i still have plenty of as i near end game.
