how do you change the color of the roof

all i can get are clay tiles, i can figure out how to change the walls but not the roof, not very happy so far not a lot to choose from

you have 4 styles of roofs , just click roof in the store and click on the right color pallete that will open roof settings , you can change there styles and colors

If you are talking about existing roofs, you will need to get on the roof, (scaffolding is available in the store) once there, aim your house flipper tool at the roof, press the R key and select the paintbrush on the left side (must have upgraded the tool), then you can change all the properties of the roof.

All the properties do not include colors. So how can you change the color of a roof. I'd like to know for both story mode and sandbox.

There aren't a lot of choices. Two of the four have the ability to change both the shape and color of the shingles the other two are static colors. Once you have your flipper tool upgraded ( can't remember how far) you should be able to update or change the ones that are changable.
