Can you do anything with the side characters?

I just got my switch copy and never played the Wii U version. I love the designs of all the side heroes like the yeti and the reaper. I am not a huge fan of the main characters that are named after colors, especially when the others have such neat designs. Is there anything you can do with those side characters or do they just sort of exist?

You can change your team around and select specific heroes to wield weapons. If you don't like Wonder-Blue and would like Wonder-Reaper to be the sword leader instead, yeah, you can do that. It's actually encouraged that you change your team leaders around because this is how you earn new moves in the game. Every hero levels up slowly when they use their weapons and the more heroes you have at max level, the more abilities you'll earn. Like rising, cyclone, stinger and a few other cool stuff. Plus, certain heroes have certain quirks based on their stats. Like Wonder-Santa who is able to run at full speed with the hammer drawn.

There's even a few special heroes you can unlock that have enhanced versions of the weapons you got.

Oh sweet. Sounds great. Every video I looked up showed that you could only have a select few characters as the leaders so I was worried the rest would just be there for aesthetic. Good to know that isn't true
