outside of diagnostic tools, don't by any workshop upgrades until you need them for Story Mode... There's not a lot of game guides on how to advance but go cheap and don't try to fully restore a car in your first two hours... I'd wait till hit closer to 10 hours of game play before you do that and don't significantly upgrade your workshop (again unless needed to finish Story Mode... if you only spend what you need to in order to complete Story Mode you should be ok.
For me, until you got well 30 K, and full garage with workshops. The junk car will have several parts the are in the orange, and can be "fix" ( if you lucky ) The red are you can use for scrap points.
