I hope this makes sense and may be of some help.
If you wish to change engine type, you will need to use engine crane, but just the block with crank will do and you can build the rest in bay.
Tip, for performance parts, I do pistons, clutch, flywheel, gearbox and OHV cam (bottom end) with stand/crane, then all the other parts can be swapped out on the dyno, no need to go back to lift or drop engine/gearbox again.
Note: I play in hard mode so I get no outlines at all and can only see condition once in personal inventory or parts list if diagnostic tools have been used. Established routines are the way to go.
