Painting a car is more expensive than the sell value increase?
I've been experimenting with fixing or adding new parts to a car I got at auction. It seems that each time the increase in the value of the car should I sell it is greater than the cost of the new parts, which is what I expect.

However, after fixing up the body panels and using the welding rig to repair the body, I spent 1,000 to paint the car in its original factory color. However, this only increased the sell value of the car by 600 from the sell price right before I painted it. So I lost 400 overall. Is this what is expected, that painting the car doesn't recoup the 1,000 it costs to paint?

Yep, and you lose that 600 if the car is dusty, so always wash before you sell.
Dust layer happens anytime you drive, or after a period of time untouched in the shed.
Profit margins are such that I can wear the 400 loss on resells, if it's a keeper, well some of them have had 5 paint jobs before I was happy, it is what it is.
Job cars get the bare minimum, just what's on the list, they don't pay more if you do more. Not my problem if they want to drive around with 2 new panels on an otherwise piece of junk barely over the repair threshold.

Interesting. I paint all my rebuilds before sale just for reputation maintenance (not that the game addresses reputation...it should). Too bad it actually penalizes you for it. I wonder if reputation has been asked for in the suggestions forum? Will check it out.

Considering you have absolutely no living expenses in the game like (food, rent, numerous bills, insurance, kids, pets) a little bit of loss on a job isn't that much of an issue for me.

I used to give them the full treatment, wash, weld, brakes, fluids, etc. and not one of them sent me a Xmas card, bunch of blind ungrateful A'holes the lot of them. I'll take the Junkyard Dog over them any day.
All bills are paid by the money laundering operation I'm a front for.

Hehee, all my sold cars are 100%, painted, wheels and headlights aligned and fluids filled.
Nothing but premium service.
Game could use a reputation system for sure.
