What am I doing wrong?
I'm trying my best to make a car that would make beating 1:50 achievement requirement on the race track.
I got myself a Salem Overking, swapped the engine for DOHC Supercharged (most horse power in the game, faster is better, right?), changed the tires to race tires (r20, 285/40), swapped all possible engine parts to be tuned, pumped gearbox ratios up and added more gears, and it still is a pain to handle on the track. Terrible car handling game wise aside, I feel like I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what. Did I overtune the car? Maybe my gearbox settings are bad? Or maybe I just to swap tires again or something.

... and if you're wondering why someone who knows nothing about cars is playing this game: I dunno, I just find renovating things (houses, cars, pressure cleaning skate parks) to be relaxing. But at the same time I like going for all achievements so yeah...

I refurbished the lambo all with performance parts and was still only barely able to get under the 1:50 so my advice would be to do that

1. Most horsepower and best everything is not always the key. I use a Tempest with a v8 2carb superchager with some performance parts. Measured power of 629hp. 2nd. use Racing slicks and not racing tires. 3rd take a couple slow laps to learn the track and good braking points for the slower turns 4. Beat my time of 1:27 :)

Actually, changing to slick tires did it for me. 1:32:817 is my time ( https://i.imgur.com/26JjGMw.jpeg )
Thank you very much for the suggestions, and please devs, work a bit on handling for the next iteration of this game. Sometimes I'd barely brush by the tires and start flying... cause physics I guess.

The Dodge Viper is one of the fastest and smoothest around the track I've found. Also the Dodge Challenger (Mosquito Mk6?) Is pretty well behaved on the track, as is the Merc AMG. Just don't max out HP if you intend to use the race track. 1000+ HP Is only really good for the speed runs.

(Also the Mitsubishi Lancer on the Workshop is an AWD, so with slick tyres, it also rips around the track - provided you are willing to use mods)

It is easy to beat the 1:50 time using more reasonably powered cars (250-300 hp range) and only sport or race tires. At those power ratings the cars will be MUCH easier to drive and control, and are still plenty fast enough to beat 1:50 (heck even 1:40). The driving in this game is simply not capable of handling some of the hp monsters it allows you to build.

I've only been to the race track about 10-15 times and only 1 of my 26 rebuilt cars is tuned. The tuned one, a regular Bandit with a ~10% tune won't be able to beat the 1:50 but with some of my other cars I beat the time aproximately 4 or 5 times from a stand still (no rolling start, no tuning). Use cars that already have a big engine stock, something like the Skyline R35 or the Sceo LX550 SC or the Panther MK2 Performance .

When it comes to being fast on a track more power does not equal faster. There's dozens of youtube videos with idiots tuning their Supra waaaaaay over 1.000hp, some even over 2.000hp and anything most of them can do is burn rubber no matter how fast you're already going, any reasonably tuned car will overtake those cars anywhere on a track except for long straights.

it's really not that hard, cms18 was a lot harder IMHO because the car handling was so much worse (and I never gave it a serious try)

Salem 1500 XL, stock engine, 235/80R16 Racing tyres on the front, 295/60R16 at the back.
Love this little truck :0

Just over 1:53 in a little stock 145hp car on skinny Standard tires... If I tuned this same car just a little bit and just upgraded to Sport tires of the exact same dimension you could beat 1:50 with it, no problem. You don't need mega-horsepower and if you don't go overkill with the hp you don't even need the most expensive tires either. Sometimes less is more...

(...and frankly I find it much more of a hoot seeing how good a lap I can put in with ordinary cars since you can really drive them to the edge of their capability, as opposed to taking some overpowered beast out and constantly having to back off to keep it on track and under control.)

And the proof: the following were replaced with performance parts, bumping the power by just 12 to 157hp: Spark plugs & ignition coils, air filter, fuel filter, intake manifold.

Additionally the 205/55R16 Standard tires were replaced with Sport tires of the same dimension. The gearbox was not touched.

As a footnote, regardless of real life I have yet to see any evidence that wider tires / bigger rims make ANY difference to handling in this game. They did not in CMS2018 - only the tire type mattered.

Maybe I'm wrong - devs care to weigh in here once and for all?

i used the games version of the bmw Z3 i got a auction and just added race tires and beat the time

My buddy and I are having a cool fun challenge against each other. Here are some times we've got.

Evo7 maxed tuned - 1:21.224
Hatchback Civic - 1:20.556

Grip and turning is just as important as HP, especially in racing form.

I think I may need to eat my words on this one... out of curiosity I did some testing of my own.

Using the car in my pic above I swapped back and forth between 205/55R16's and 255/40R16's. Both sets were Sport tires. (This is a great car for this test because with no excess of power there was no fishtailing etc. to manage, confounding the test, so it was easier to achieve 'clean' laps for a fairer comparison.) I found I consistently achieved lap times roughly 2 seconds better (give or take a bit) using the fatter tires. This is over many laps with each set of tires, and I alternated between sets several times in order to ensure any improvements were not just a matter of me learning the track better for the car & tires.

Based on that it would seem that in CMS2021 the code actually may factor tire width into grip... nice - I'm sure that would be an improvement over '18 (or the driving in '18 was just so bad it was harder to notice a difference...)
