Edit - never mind - he only has 3 in stock.
My advice would be to make use of the Haywind Teleport spell you can buy at the leftmost magic shop for 1800g. It helps bank faster and if you're quick you can farm 2 sheep pens at once. There's one sheep pen north of town with 5 sheep in it, and another on the road from the starter town near the brewery with 6.
If you're having trouble making gold for the teleport spell, the 2nd tier of fish you can catch at the docks sells for 75g each cooked and a full inventory of them is exactly 1800g.
I managed to get the bat thingy today. It seems to be a random event. Keep plugging away.
So.. if you are not too far in the game, i would suggest you restart it and pick tailoring (along with other such skills). I think cooking and fishing have no boost equipment item also but i cant tell you if you start with special items like in tailoring
Re murdering sheep: if you attack them without a weapon in your hand, it takes a while to kill them and they fight back in the meantime. This builds up your defence stat as a knock-on effect. Again it's a grind but it works.
Grinding defense is super easy - just aggro every mob in the vicinity when you're shopping trees or fishing or mining. You gain experience every time they attack even if they miss. So 6 angry rabbits or zombies or wolves will give continuous experience while you're chopping trees.
The best way to get defense up is to farm trolls between your cabin and the small town with a forge. They drop fingers which you use to make daggers later on, and the end guy drops good items. I farmed them for a while, get your casting high enough to cast heal, and just go to town. I think they also drop Food so you have another source of healing. I got to 20 in attack and defense fast there.
