How do I activate Ilya's sheathe mechanic?

I know I'm missing something obvious, but I can't figure out how sheathe works. I keep exchanging cards, including the card being used or a different but sheathe never procs. I let the golem boss discard a card and it still didn't proc. How does this ability work?

Exchanging doesn't make sheathe proc, you need to either use Lucy skills like renovate, or the discard 1 draw 3 one, or vodka-improved abilities after you use vodka in the item menu on a character once he has skills you want upgraded with it, or you use Ilya's lightning abilities that explicitly say they'll discard a card if X condition is met. There's Ilya skills that discard a card as long as there's just one other Ilya ability in hand, for instance.

I assume demon hunter item would also work but this one I haven't used.

That makes a lot of sense - I don't think I've picked up a discard card in my deck yet which is why I was so confused. Thank you!

It also works when some enemies force you to discard (e.g. the new Head Maid mini-boss punching you or the King's thunder crystals breaking)

Sheathe does not work on exchanging, exclusion, or being discarded from overdrawing.
Ilyas vodka can upgrade one skill belonging to another party member that also makes it discards a card so you can more consistantly trigger sheathes

Uh sorry, cast skill with sheathe first then discard or discard first then cast skill with sheathe?

@Falah If you want the "sheathe" effect from the card just discard it, if you want to discard it with other skill buffed with vodka - just choose the card with the sheath effect you want.As you discard the card with "sheathe" keyword the effect will trigger automatically.

As stated above "exchanging, excluding or overdrawing" won't trigger the sheath effect, you also can't trigger more than one "sheathe" with full hand discards like "renovate" in one action.
