Triple jump is busted?

The game has a tendency to randomly eat your 2nd or 3rd jump input. I still haven't figured out why -- at first I thought you could only double or triple jump if Polpo isn't already falling, but no, sometimes the game will just eat your 2nd or 3rd jump input for no discernible reason. Is it a timing window (and if it is, why)? I don't understand. It just seems broken and unreliable.

I played a lot during the alpha, never had any issue.
I find that the controls are pretty tight and responsive, as they should be in a game like this that requires just a little bit of extra skill compared to other types of games.
