is there a playable race that counts as "large"?
for monk unarmed attacks it says small, medium and large characters get different damage bonus

You can cast a spell to make it "large".

No but you can use Enlarge Person and make a medium character into large. Or even huge, if you use Legendary Proportions.

weird, i would have thought orcs and elves would be large and the human sized races would be medium

Large is not about height, it's about volume. A medium creature is one that can fit and threaten a square of 5 feet. A large creature fits in a 10 feet square, so 4 medium squares.

So unless an elf or orc is the size of a horse, they are still medium size.

Kinda. Some of the mounts become or start Large, and your character can ride those.

Or you can enlarge yourself via enlarge person.

Or as part of one of the other transmutation spells.

What this means is that your caster buddy can cast Enlarge person on your monk and you'll get the listed damage increase. And they don't list it, but if you become Huge, there's a further damage increase. And so forth.

The Quarterstaff monk can also treat their staff as being larger without actually getting larger.
