And I always felt that appointing a successful, but otherwise unknown upstart was chiefly a political move - to avoid siding with any of the known Mendevian powers.
That it happened to work so well (or not so well, if you tern evil or betray the cause in
the end) is by sheer luck alone. It wasn't meant to. Or in my headcanon - Desna playing 4D chess.
But it wasn't meant to succeed. Any actual move against the Worldwound risks it all. And giving up is not an option. It's a crap situation. What do you do if you're a revered leader? You look to keep the status quo. Nobody who has ever seen demons' unhinged violence would disagree that's not a good choice.
Of course, she has no grasp of strategy whatsoever, but at the point where you seemingly don't come back from the Abyss, it's the most successful crusade of all. There's immense pressure to do something and no one left to actually decide what, much less do it (but her). Under this pressure she buckles and... well, we know what happens next.
That being said I might agree that she's a good person. Except for one thing. The Sun Exilir thing. It's a telltale sign of a cult of personality. The jealousy bit later only reinforces that notion. She (and the Church and everyone worshipping her grannyness) considers the achievement of being the Worldwound's doorstop so great that no one else could possibly do it better. Which is by definition, and thence proven wrong.
And while we're on the subject, I would really like to hear what Pharasma has to say about the elixir business.
The fact that she lets a corrupted political circle run her... Empire tells me that she's afraid of facing difficult decisions consequences which very well could result in her being revered less. That people revere her for unnaturally prolonging her life, no matter if it's for good reason or, if it's true or not, the church deciding it for her is... ugh.
In my eyes, so far (I've just arrived in the Abyss) she has all the reason to be jealous of me because even though she might be a good person at heart, she's a relic to be shelved. Now I know I have a problem with authorities, which is funny considering my NG/LG Angel character, but ehhh... I mean, naturally the kind of lawful this game promotes rubs me the wrong way anyway.
Could be that I'm not yet as qualified to have a definite opinion about her since I'm not done with the game yet (Oh boy...) but it's my opinion so far. I'm tempted, IF I have the patience to replay the game, to play a Rumpelstiltskin-like Trickster since Devil seems not worth it story and progression-wise. (The mythic paths should be available when Angel and Demon paths are)
true eat the begining she seems friendly alright, the more you advance, the more you realise she just played you
oh boi the justice you can bring upon her if you go Aeon or Lich ... hue hue hue
I have sung her praises till I’ve no voice left though so I’ll leave it for another day. One of my favourite characters of all time.
I am still waiting to see your... special drawing of her with your Steam artworks.
You know… it’s a ‘you drink it once and it makes you young again’ potion, not a facial cream to be applied daily :P
Interesting. I thought there was some text where priests pay for her potions that she drinks plural, I may be wrong. Gave me the impression it happens more than once. Definitely not daily though.
I understood it as well that she needs to drink it regularly and that the costs of the potion alone is worth a national budget.
No. She drank this potion twice. Drinking it makes you young again (mid twenties) and you age from that point regularly.
Also found this: "Prices for a dose of the elixir vary wildly since the elixir is sold at auction, but no dose has ever sold for less than 50,000 gp." So lets say the two doses shes got cost... even 2 million gold, my party's equipment costs more.
So nope, she's not bankrupting Mendev, she will not melt away like the witch in Rapunzel if she never has another vial again and she didn't want to take it in the first place anyway.
:)
I also don't get why people mumble about the 'granny' thing.
PHYSICALLY she is late twenties. In a magical world where Ember is 100, Arue is I-dont-wanna-know-how-old and Nocticula even older and the MC can find 50 ways to prolong their life (Lich among them) what I care about is that physically she is a young woman.
Mentally she is less life experience that Arue who has butchered and f* half the planet but now presents herself as a helpless girlie. Riiiiiight...
And personality wise... she is tired and she feels old. Because she's been busting herself for her country for years and everyone else is happily having a life and love and family while she's sitting there trying to keep the country together. That she doesn't manage it makes her even more likeable cause she sticks to it and tries.
And that's not singing her praises... I'll do that some time later :P
Now I'm going to check - would I able to get my revenge on you and kill you with my own hands as Angel and Azata ^_^
Ignore it completely as economy in D&D is non-existing. All prices on goods & labour are complete random crap, mostly based on abstract balance ideas.
About sun orchid potion - AFAIK whole planet have a few doses per year so it isn't going on market and don't have any kind of real price tag.
Even in game it said that Galfrey didn't bought elixir herself, she get it from church of Iomedae (and it's quite powerful and widespread church).
Trying to kill a person that seems to doing job better then her because of envy?
Sending army into deadly trap of Iz AGAIN?! While she is unable to win a fight against undead dragon? And what was her plan to counter Deskari in a fight, lol? Praying "he would not came", yean? >_<
Putting incompetent leaders like Irabeth and Annevia on high-ranked posts? And she isn't a girl so can't hide behind "lack of experience".
It's ironic that she's able to keep LG alignment after all useless deaths she'd caused. But I guess it's magic of "plot armour" :)
